Jan 7th - Kyle has made great progress in all areas in the past few weeks. We are thrilled with all of his new skills. He's now army crawling so much faster and efficient, he's pivoting left and right, he's getting in and out of sitting so much faster too, and he just started taking actual steps behind a push walker (with our assistance) a little over a week ago! He's still not too interested in taking steps in his gait trainer but he will take steps pretty well behind a push walker so we've decided to just use the push walker for gait training, and so far it's going pretty well.
Kyle had his six month follow-up appointment with Dr. Lindsey the neurologist. She's very pleased with his development and all the new skills he acquired recently. We got a referral to orthopedics later this month and depending on what they say Kyle will probably get new AFO's that are hinged so he can move his legs more freely when he wears them. He also got a prescription for a wrist splint for his right hand to wear at night, although his PT doesn't really think he needs it. Dr. Lindsey didn't think his hamstrings are that tight and most of the issues are related to strength and not tone.
The feeding consultants have been ready to stop all tube feeds since Kyle has been consistently eating more but we weren't sure if we were ready. We were afraid that he might have lost all the allowable weight during a wean that we should not go any further, even though they did tell us that weight loss is expected during a wean and they would expect more weight loss on him at this point. We decided to weigh him last night before deciding on whether or not to stop all tubed calories. We were absolutely SHOCKED to see that he actually GAINED weight! He GAINED 120 grams (4 oz) in one week in the middle of a wean! Needless to say we were now comfortable stopping all tube feeds. We still have to give him water through the tube to prevent constipation until he can get enough fluids on his own, or until he can show us that the amount of fluids he's currently taking is enough to keep him hydrated. So the tube stays in for the time being but we are so excited that it might be coming out soon!!
